HDMI to Composite AV Converter: Setup, Power, PAL/NTSC & Troubleshooting

An HDMI-to-AV adapter is an active digital-to-analogue converter, not an ordinary extension cable. HDMI carries digital audio/video. The yellow RCA jack usually labelled CVBS carries composite video, while red and white RCA jacks carry analogue stereo audio.

The word AV is sometimes used loosely. Composite video normally uses one yellow video jack. Component video (YPbPr) normally uses three green/blue/red video jacks and is a different format. Match the converter's labelled output to the exact input on your television.

Set it up

  1. Check the converter's direction: HDMI is the source INPUT and composite/AV is the display OUTPUT. Reverse-direction converters are different products.
  2. Connect HDMI from the source device to the converter. Connect yellow CVBS to the TV's composite input, and red/white audio if the converter supplies it.
  3. Provide the exact low-voltage power specified by the converter maker. A USB socket or power adapter is not optional unless the model explicitly says it is self-powered.
  4. Select the TV's composite input and the converter's PAL/NTSC mode if present. Set the source to a video mode listed in the converter manual.
  5. Turn on the converter, source and TV. Many models output standard-definition video (often 480i/576i); check the model's spec sheet for its actual modes.

What to expect

Composite is a legacy standard-definition format. A modern high-resolution HDMI picture is reduced in detail and fine text can be hard to read; the converter does not turn an old TV into an HD display. The TV must have a compatible composite input, or you need a separate, correctly directed converter for its available input.

Troubleshooting

  • Blank screen: check HDMI INPUT versus AV OUTPUT, select the correct TV input, confirm power and test a source resolution supported by the converter.
  • Black-and-white, rolling or unstable image: check PAL/NTSC compatibility and the TV's video-standard setting.
  • Video but no sound: make sure the red/white audio plugs are connected to the matching TV input; HDMI-to-composite video models may not provide audio on every connector.
  • Some apps or discs show no picture: source-device output restrictions and HDCP support vary. Check the converter and source manuals; the converter should not be used to bypass content protections.
